Con Giancarlo Ferrero arriva a Trieste un leader positivo, capace con la sua esperienza di cementare un gruppo già molto compatto.
Le sue prime parole da biancorosso non lasciano spazio a interpretazioni, per quella che si preannuncia essere una stagione da vivere dando tutto sé stesso:
“Adoro le sfide, soprattutto se dietro c’è un progetto solido e l’ambizione di fare qualcosa di importante. Essere a Trieste per me oggi rappresenta questo. Si tratta di una città in cui ho giocato davvero moltissime volte da avversario e ogni volta che la lasciavo dicevo alla mia compagna “sai, forse in un’altra vita potrei giocare qui, è una città splendida”. Non ho dovuto aspettare un’altra vita. L’opportunità è arrivata quest’anno e per questo devo ringraziare Mike Arcieri, che mi sta dando la possibilità di vivere questa nuova sfida sportiva. Dopo aver lavorato con lui per un anno e mezzo a Varese abbiamo imparato a conoscerci e a capirci; è stato lui ad aver pensato che io potessi essere utile alla causa della Pallacanestro Trieste e di questo gli sono grato.
Qui ritrovo anche Daniele Cavaliero, che per me è parte della famiglia, una persona di cuore, con la quale ho condiviso parte del mio viaggio in passato e che ora ritrovo qui, nella sua Trieste, anche se in altra veste. Questa esperienza sarà molto importante per entrambi.
Alla fine della scorsa stagione ho seguito ciò che è successo a Trieste dopo la retrocessione e ho avuto modo di leggere il comunicato della proprietà ai suoi tifosi e ai media, lo ho trovato perfetto: forte, chiaro, in grado di comunicare solidità e idee per il futuro, nonostante si stesse vivendo un momento difficile. Quando ho dovuto decidere sul mio avvenire, quel messaggio forte mi ha dato un altro elemento per prendere questa scelta. Per un giocatore sapere che ci sia progettualità è fondamentale e l’aver confermato un nucleo solido di giocatori, che hanno avuto modo di conoscersi negli ultimi anni, è la testimonianza di quello che sto dicendo.
Ho la fortuna di avere già molti amici nella squadra. Insieme a Stefano ho condiviso l’avventura a Trapani, con Ariel c’è un rapporto di stima enorme e ho finalmente il piacere di giocarci insieme (visto che da avversario è un pessimo cliente). Conosco bene Campo, Candu, e Giovanni, con cui abbiamo battagliato negli ultimi anni. Lodo mi ricorda me stesso alla sua età, ha la stessa fame di migliorare.
Ci guiderà un coach all’esordio in un campionato europeo, ma che ho avuto modo di sentire in queste settimane: il suo entusiasmo, la sua energia sono contagiosi, sono sicuro che faremo un ottimo lavoro. Senza dubbio coach Christian porterà grandi novità e noi giocatori dovremo essere bravi ad accoglierle ed essere disponibili al cambiamento, facendo nostra la sua filosofia.
Ho sempre cercato di mettere qualcosa di mio in spogliatoio. Io penso che la cosa più importante per fare in modo che un gruppo funzioni sia che tutti si sentano importanti e abbiano chiaro il proprio ruolo e quello che devono fare. Tutti, giocatori e staff, devono sentire di far parte di un progetto, sentirsi coinvolti, in modo tale che siano responsabilizzati da un lato e partecipi dei risultati dall’altro.
Quello che porterò sarà grande energia, che è un po’ il mio mantra, e grande disponibilità per far si che tutti possano essere centrati nel progetto.
Come gruppo avremo una grande responsabilità, ossia quella di rendere il PalaTrieste un fortino, da subito, dove tutte le altre squadre abbiano timore di venire a giocare. Da avversario ho sempre apprezzato e rispettato l’ambiente che c’era e che c’è, e i tanti triestini in squadra sanno perfettamente quanto questo sia fondamentale.
Quando mi lego a un obiettivo, a una causa, do tutto me stesso, non mi risparmio mai. Se sposo un’idea e un progetto state pure certi che darò tutto me stesso per portare a casa il risultato. Varese ha rappresentato una parte importante della mia carriera. Ho ricevuto moltissimo calore, ma ho deciso di sposare il progetto di Trieste perché la sfida e la missione di questa società e dei nostri tifosi sono estremamente affascinanti e ambiziose”.

With Giancarlo Ferrero, a positive leader arrives in Trieste, capable of solidifying an already tightly-knit group with his experience.
His first words as a “Biancorosso” player leave no room for interpretation, as this season promises to be one he’ll live to the fullest:
“I love challenges, especially when there’s a solid project and the ambition to achieve something significant. Being in Trieste represents that for me today. It’s a city where I’ve played countless times as an opponent, and every time I left, I told my partner, ‘You know, maybe in another life, I could play here; it’s a splendid city.’ Well, I didn’t have to wait for another life. The opportunity came this year, and for that, I must thank Mike Arcieri, who’s giving me the chance to take on this new sporting challenge. After working with him for a year and a half in Varese, we got to know and understand each other; it was he who thought I could contribute to the cause of Pallacanestro Trieste, and for that, I’m grateful.
Here, I also find Daniele Cavaliero, who is like family to me, a person with a big heart, with whom I shared part of my journey in the past, and now I find him here, in his Trieste, albeit in a different role. This experience will be essential for both of us.
At the end of the last season, I followed what happened in Trieste after relegation, and I had the chance to read the statement from the ownership to its fans and the media. I found it perfect: strong, clear, and capable of conveying stability and ideas for the future, even though they were going through a difficult time. When I had to decide on my future, that strong message gave me another reason to make this choice. For a player, knowing that there’s a plan is crucial, and the fact that they’ve confirmed a solid core of players who have gotten to know each other in recent years is a testament to what I’m saying.
I’m fortunate to already have many friends on the team. I shared the adventure in Trapani with Stefano, and with Ariel, there’s a huge mutual respect, and now I finally have the pleasure of playing with him (since as an opponent, he’s a tough customer). I know Campo, Candu, and Giovanni well, with whom we battled in recent years. Lodo reminds me of myself at his age; he has the same hunger to improve.
We’ll be led by a coach making his debut in a European league, but I had the opportunity to hear him in these weeks: his enthusiasm and his energy are infectious, and I’m sure we’ll do an excellent job. Undoubtedly, Coach Christian will bring significant changes, and as players, we’ll have to be good at embracing them and being open to change, making his philosophy our own.
I’ve always tried to bring something of my own to the locker room. I believe that the most crucial thing to ensure a group functions is for everyone to feel significant and have a clear understanding of their role and responsibilities. Both players and staff need to feel part of a project and involved, so they’re empowered on one side and share in the results on the other.
What I’ll bring is tremendous energy, which is kind of my mantra, and a great willingness to ensure that everyone is focused on the project. As a group, we’ll have a significant responsibility: to make PalaTrieste a fortress from the start, a place where all the other teams will fear coming to play. As an opponent, I’ve always appreciated and respected the environment that was there and still exists, and the many Triestini players on the team know perfectly well how crucial this is.
When I commit to a goal, to a cause, I give it my all; I never hold back. If I embrace an idea and a project, rest assured that I’ll give everything to achieve the desired outcome. Varese has been an essential part of my career. I received a lot of warmth, but I decided to embrace the Trieste project because the challenge and the mission of this club and our fans are fascinating and ambitious.“
