Dalla sala stampa del PalaTrieste coach Christian ha presentato la partita di domani – domenica 22 ottobre – in programma alle 18 con la Fortitudo Bologna, gara della quinta giornata del Girone Rosso di Serie A2. Un test importante per i biancorossi dopo la trasferta di Cento che gli ha visti sconfitti al termine dell’overtime. Di seguito le sue dichiarazioni.
Con Cento, la squadra ha mostrato alcuni limiti in attacco. Come avete lavorato durante la settimana per migliorare?
“Cento è una squadra molto forte in difesa e ho avvertito che la nostra strategia offensiva non ha funzionato come avremmo voluto. A un livello molto alto, semplicemente non siamo riusciti a concludere le azioni come avevamo fatto fin ora. In questa prima parte di stagione abbiamo giocato contro avversari di alto livello e spesso abbiamo segnato canestri importanti nell’ultimo quarto per aumentare il vantaggio, ma contro Cento non siamo riusciti a farlo. Abbiamo imparato molto riguardo alle piccole cose che possiamo fare e migliorarle. Non vedo l’ora di competere di nuovo con i nostri ragazzi”.
Come hanno reagito i tuoi giocatori alla prima sconfitta?
“Sappiamo di avere un gruppo eccezionale di giocatori che comprendono che, per crescere, è necessario affrontare delle sconfitte. Abbiamo colto l’occasione della sconfitta per imparare e migliorare. Riconosciamo che in questo campionato ci sono molte squadre di alto livello contro cui dovremo giocare bene, quindi comprendiamo che, se continuiamo a imparare e migliorare, il nostro futuro è ancora davanti a noi e il meglio deve ancora venire”.
Domenica abbiamo una delle partite più importanti dell’anno di fronte a noi. Qual è l’atmosfera nello spogliatoio?
“Il nostro gruppo è stato eccezionale fin dall’inizio della stagione, considerando ogni partita come la più importante. Riconosciamo che in questo campionato non si sa quali partite diventeranno le più importanti. Li elogio per la loro dedizione nella preparazione e, per la maggior parte, siamo riusciti a essere la squadra migliore possibile nella maggior parte delle partite. I nostri stili di gioco sono opposti, quindi la squadra che riuscirà a imporre il proprio marchio avrà la migliore possibilità di vincere. Abbiamo diverse strategie di gioco a disposizione, sia veloci che lente, ma ciò che conta è affermare chi siamo e mettere in pratica la nostra filosofia”.
Quanto sarà importante il contributo del pubblico in una partita così complessa?
“Abbiamo dei tifosi appassionati che comprendono il gioco del basket e sanno quanto siano importanti per la partita. Sarà fantastico avere i nostri tifosi in tribuna, entusiasti, partecipi del nostro obiettivo. Abbiamo bisogno del loro sostegno, delle loro grida e del loro entusiasmo per aiutarci a essere migliori in campo. Credo che il legame che abbiamo con i nostri tifosi sia unico, così come la loro determinazione. Quando sono concentrati nel sostenerci e mettere pressione sugli avversari, diventiamo una squadra difficile da battere e contribuiscono in modo significativo all’atmosfera. “Cento is a very strong defensive team. I felt like our offense and game plan actually operated at a really high level; we just didn’t finish plays at the level that we had been for the majority of the season. Over and over this season, we played against good opponents and made big shots in the fourth quarter to extend the lead, but we just didn’t finish those against Cento. I think we learned a lot, especially about the little things we can do to be better. I’m looking forward to getting a chance to compete again with our guys with a similar game plan”.
How did your players react to the first loss?
“You know, we’ve got an outstanding group of players. They understand that in order to grow, there must be some level of failure, so we took the loss as an opportunity to learn and get better. We recognize that within this championship, we’re going to have to play well against many great teams, and we just understand that if we keep learning and improving, our future is ahead of us, and our best is ahead of us. So, we wanted to turn the loss into an understanding that it’s a learning opportunity to be at our best”.
On Sunday, we have one of the most important games of the year ahead of us. What is the mood in the locker room?
“You know, our group has been outstanding all season long, treating every game as the most important game. We recognize that, in this championship, you don’t know which games throughout the season will become the most important. I applaud them for their preparation in every game we’ve played. They’ve been outstanding, and for the most part, we’ve been the better team in a large majority of the games. Obviously, this weekend, it’s a game against one of the better teams in this league and one of the better coaches in this league. We’ll need to be at our best, but we’ve been striving to be at our best no matter who we’re playing against time and time again, and I look forward to watching our team rise to the occasion”.
What do you think will be the keys to the game?
“The key for us is always to establish who we are. We’re an uptempo, fast, aggressive team, and we’ve got to bring that into the game. Cento does a great job defensively; they’re very disciplined. In a lot of ways, our styles of play are complete opposites. So, whichever team puts their imprint on the game will have the best chance to win. We have a team that has played well when we’ve had to play fast, and we’ve had a team that’s played well when we’ve had to play slow. We have a lot of different ways that we can play; it’s just about us establishing who we are and putting our imprint on the game”.
How important will the public’s contribution be in such a complex game?
“Well, we have great fans who are passionate about our team and understand the game of basketball and their importance to the game. It’s going to be great to have our home fans packed in there, excited about what we have to do and excited about the journey. We need them with us, cheering for us, helping us continue to get better on the floor. I think the connection we have with our fans is unique, and their enthusiasm is unique. When they focus on helping us be at our best and put pressure on our opponents, we’re going to be really hard to beat, and they truly add to our atmosphere. We’re fortunate to have a great fan base that will be with us on this journey as we strive to become the best team in this championship. Sunday is another opportunity for all of us to grow”.
