La seconda gara di campionato porta Trieste in trasferta contro l’Umana San Giobbe Chiusi, sconfitta all’esordio sul campo della Fortitudo Bologna. I biancorossi privi di Vildera, dopo la prova di forza offerta nel debutto contro Orzinuovi, cercano conferme e continuità.

Palla a due conquistata dai padroni di casa che muovono la prima azione offensiva e portano Spear al primo canestro dell’incontro. Trieste non punge e Spear ne mette altri due. La difesa di Chiusi è molto stretta e non concede nulla ai biancorossi, che hanno diverse difficoltà in fase di costruzione. L’Umana muove invece molto bene il pallone, trovando facilmente linee di passaggio. Arrivano da Ruzzier, ottimamente servito da Candussi, i primi punti dall’arco. Possamai e Reyes si sfidano dalla media e il punteggio è 6-5 dopo tre minuti. Chiusi ha in Spear il faro del suo attacco, che ne metti altri due dalla linea della carità e tiene avanti i suoi. Reyes è costretto ad uscire per il secondo fallo, ci pensa Candussi dai 6 e 75 a ridare il sorriso a coach Christian. Possamai è una furia e va a schiacciare il nuovo vantaggio interno, subito pareggiato ancora da Candussi, stavolta dal pitturato. Trieste ora si è rimessa in carreggiata per quanto attiene il ritmo, dopo esser stata sorpresa in avvio: il sorpasso avviene dalla lunetta grazie a Campogrande. Chiusi si riporta velocemente in attacco e trova due liberi per fallo di Ferrero, Jerkovic mette solo il secondo e impatta il match a quota 11. Tilghmann ruba palla e vola a canestro, infila in appoggio e si procura l’and-one, trasformandolo. Dopo qualche errore da ambo i lati del parquet – con punteggio fermo per diversi minuti – Chiusi sfrutta i vari rimbalzi offensivi e con il secondo fallo di Campogrande si crea un ulteriore allungo con i liberi di Tilghmann (16-11) a 2 minuti dal termine del quarto. Trieste trova un ottimo canestro in appoggio da Deangeli e respira un po’, la difesa non riesce però a bloccare Tilghmann che continua a produrre fatturato. Ultimo minuto che inizia con il canestro di uno Jerkovic piuttosto libero nel pitturato, Trieste prova a reagire nel finale ma i vari tentativi da fuori trovano solo ferri. Gli ultimi punti arrivano a gioco fermo – 1 da Stefanini, 2 da Bossi – prima del canestro finale di Ferrero che dall’arco chiude il primo quarto per Trieste sul -3 (21-18).
Inizia il secondo quarto con palla in mano a Reyes, le prime azioni delle due compagini non muovono però il tabellone, nonostante i diversi rimbalzi offensivi recuperati dai toscani. Trieste si intestardisce molto nel tentare di trovare il pareggio con il tiro pesante, senza però trovare il fondo della retina. Ruzzier realizza un punto dalla lunetta (tecnico a coach Bassi), ma dall’altra parte è Tilghmann a fare la voce grossa: canestro, and-one e score in doppia cifra, con Chiusi che va a +5. Candussi tiene Trieste ad un solo possesso di distacco trovando spazio nel pitturato e servito ottimamente dai compagni. Un po’ di confusione in questa fase di gioco, con le due squadre che non trovano continuità e con le idee leggermente annebbiate. Ferrero cerca la via del canestro e trova il fallo di Possamai, portando in dote alla causa i due punti del provvisorio -1 (24-23). Chiusi cerca di aumentare il ritmo, con i due stranieri indiziati speciali dell’ultimo passaggio. La difesa biancorossa fa tesoro delle falle del primo tempo e chiude bene le maglie, Ferrero sfrutta quello che sta diventando un buon momento e riporta avanti Trieste. Tilghmann non ci sta e segna da sotto ed a metà tempo i padroni di casa sono davanti di 1 lunghezza. Dopo due time-out (uno per parte) si torna in campo e Stefanini spara la bomba del nuovo +4. Trieste in confusione perde due palloni consecutivi e fornisce un involontario assist ai padroni di casa, che trovano altri due punti con Stefanini. Brooks si mette in proprio e riesce ad iscriversi a referto, ma la spina nel fianco della difesa triestina è Tilghmann, che ancora una volta riesce a segnare arrivando fino al canestro. La reazione di Trieste è flebile, soprattutto di fronte ad una difesa molto tosta di Chiusi. E’ il momento di Stefanini, che ne mette altri tre e porta i suoi sul +9 a poco più di 2 minuti dalla sirena. Candussi fa 2/2 dalla lunetta e tiene Trieste in scia, poi però commette fallo su Stefanini sul movimento del tiro da tre punti e per il numero 15 toscano sono tre tiri dalla lunetta: 3/3, doppia cifra per il n°15 di Chiusi e vantaggio in doppia cifra per l’Umana. Trieste in campo con il doppio play Ruzzier-Bossi, la riscossa porta in ogni caso la firma di Brooks che arme i missili e colpisce da fuori per il -7 a poco meno di un minuto dal termine della frazione. Chiusi riprova a scappare con Jerkovic ottimamente servito da Tilghmann, che poi si ripete con Chapelli. L’ultima azione dei biancorossi non produce risultato e si va all’intervallo lungo sul 43-32.
La ripresa inizia con i padroni di casa che perdono il primo pallone, Trieste ne approfitta al secondo tentativo, con Reyes che riporta ad una cifra il gap tra le due compagini. Lo stesso si ripete nell’azione successiva dopo un recupero di Brooks, Trieste preme sull’acceleratore dopo la stoppata di Candussi che lancia l’azione che finisce con il canestro in appoggio di Deangeli. Trieste fulminea in questo inizio di terzo quarto, con ben 6 lunghezze recuperate in un minuto e mezzo. Coach Bassi chiama time-out e interrompe la striscia. Possamai interrompe il digiuno dei toscani, segnando due canestri consecutivi, poi commette il proprio terzo fallo su Reyes, che dalla linea della carità (2/2) porta il punteggio sul 47-40 dopo 3 minuti. Chiusi non segna nemmeno potendo godere di un extrapossesso, stessa situazione dall’altro lato del parquet. Errori su errori in un momento particolarmente concitato in cui Trieste prova ad accorciare le distanze e Chiusi vuole assolutamente tenere a distanza gli avversari. La gita in lunetta per Ferrero produce due punti importantissimi per i biancorossi, che a metà tempo sono a -5. Sul capovolgimento di fronte arriva il terzo fallo di Ruzzier, che significa lunetta per Tilghmann, che riprende a segnare (2/2). Brooks viene stoppato da Spear e lancia il contropiede di Tilghmann, fermato fallosamente da Campogrande: 1/2 e +8 interno. I padroni di casa muovono nuovamente il punteggio, pur a gioco fermo, con Raffaelli. Candussi però non ci sta e colpisce da fuori nel momento probabilmente migliore per i suoi, che in difesa bloccano ogni velleità dei padroni di casa e chiudono davanti la frazione.
La distanza minima tra le due formazioni lascia presagire un ultimo quarto da cardiopalma. Si comincia con Trieste che sbaglia da fuori con Candussi, come del resto fa Chiusi poco dopo. Trieste torna in attacco e con Candussi in appoggio allunga il proprio vantaggio. Ora sono i padroni di casa a tentare di recuperare da fuori, senza colpo ferire. Campogrande, invece, sa come si fa e colpisce proprio dall’arco, ed è Trieste, adesso, ad essere sopra di 9 lunghezze. Dopo il doveroso time-out di coach Bassi, i toscani provano a riprendersi la gara in mano, ma la carta del tiro da fuori continua a non essere valida. Trieste gioca in controllo e, con calma, mette Candussi in condizione di continuare a colpire da sotto. Si aprono le maglie difensive dell’Umana e per uno come Ruzzier è un invito a nozze: entrata al tabellone, appoggio vincente e +13 dopo 3’37”. Il digiuno dei padroni di casa è interrotto da Dellosto, che segna da sotto e prova a dare la carica ai suoi. Deangeli in tap-in rimette le cose a posto, poi altro canestro di Dellosto e altri due punti di Candussi. Chiusi non molla, ma Trieste tiene bene in difesa e continua a produrre fatturato. La tripla di Raffaelli e il successivo canestro su rubata fanno esplodere il PalaPania e hanno il sapore del “rimettiamo tutto in discussione?”. Il successivo canestro di Reyes suona invece come un “No, grazie” e i successivi tentativi a vuoto da fuori dei padroni di casa sembrano dare ragione al n°7 in maglia rossa. Il cronometro continua a scorrere e i due liberi di Martini a 1’14” dal termine (+8 Trieste) arrivano probabilmente troppo tardi. Ruzzier sbaglia da fuori, ma l’extrapossesso successivo, il fallo di Martini e i due liberi segnati da Ruzzier mettono in ghiaccio l’incontro. C’è ancora tempo per gli ultimi canestri di Campogrande e Tilghmann, ma la vittoria, meritata, è di Trieste che resta a punteggio pieno nel Girone Rosso.
